An Email Alias will create an email address on for your unit that will forward email to another email address.

Examples of email aliases are 'cubmaster', 'troopmaster', and 'treasurer'.

Email aliases can be used to setup generic email addresses for unit leadership that will remain constant while actual unit leaders change over time. When a unit leader changes, just change the email alias forward-to address!

Here is an example to further describe the Email Alias feature.

Lets say you are part of Pack 111 from Nortfield, Illinois and your SOAR unit website is http://northfield111.mypack.us. Your Cubmaster is John Jones and his email address is jjones@yahoo.com. You can create an email alias cubmaster@nortfield111.mypack.us. When email is sent to this address, it will be automatically forwarded to jjones@yahoo.com. Two years from now, John Jones moves on with his son to Troop 111 and Cindy Knowles becomes the new Cubmaster. You can change the Cubmaster@ alias to her email address of cindy_k@yahoo.com and all email will now be forwarded to her.

If you have added your own domain to your unit's website, this feature gets even better.

Lets say you added the domain nortfield111.com to your unit's website and can now access your unit's website via the addresses http://www.nortifield111.com and http://nortifield111.mypack.us. You can also now automtically use the two email aliases cubmaster@northfield111.com and cubmaster@northfield111.mypack.us. Both will forward email to cindy_k@yahoo.com

Anyone can send email to an Email Alias - as such they are susceptible to SPAM.

Care should be taken when customizing your website to NOT include any email addresses in the About Us, Welcome Message, or the "teasers" for Announcements. If you can see an email address on your home page, so can SPAMMERS.

Your website comes with a Contact Us form that will allow anonymous users to contact you while not providing any email addresses to the public. There is no need to provided email addresses to the public.

An Email Alias can only forward email messages to a single email address. You can create an Email List using the Public list type to create an EMail Alias with multiple email addresses.
